Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very good French-pattern infantry briquet saber manufactured in Germany by the well-known Solingen firm Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie. Closely following the form of the French An XI infantry saber, it retains its curved blade, characteristic brass hilt, and original leather scabbard with suspension fittings. The ricasso bears the combined King’s Head and Knight’s Helmet trademarks associated with Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie.
The sword features a 26 7/8” blade with an overall length of 32 1/4”. The ricasso is marked on one side with the double trademark "Knights's Helmet" (Ritter-helm) alongside a "Kings's Head" (königskopf) logo of legendary German maker Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie of Solingen. This denotes that the sword was exported to France from Germany.
When Weyersberg and Kirschbaum combined in 1883 to form Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie., the two trademarks were used together and became one of the most recognizable Solingen edged-weapon markings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Solingen had been one of Europe’s principal centers for sword and blade manufacture for centuries, and its firms supplied weapons to military and commercial customers throughout Europe and overseas. Weyersberg in particular had an extensive export trade before its merger with Kirschbaum.
There is some light oxidation staining to the blade but there are no edge nicks. The original scabbard is intact, measuring 27 ½”. Both suspension rings are intact, but the leather has some bending in spots.
The combination of the recognizable French briquet form, intact scabbard, and clearly identifiable WKC double trademark makes this a good example of the continued international manufacture of French-pattern military sidearms during the later 19th century. The light oxidation to the blade and bending of the leather scabbard are the principal condition considerations, while the maker markings remain especially useful for dating and identification.
