Original France WWII Free French Cross of Lorraine Flag Embroidered With “Vive La France, Vive De Gaulle et nos Allies” - 42” x 21”

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Free France was a political entity that claimed to be the legitimate government of France following the dissolution of the Third Republic. Led by French general Charles de Gaulle, Free France was established as a government-in-exile in London in June 1940 after the Fall of France during World War II and fought the Axis as an Allied nation with its Free French Forces. Free France also supported the resistance in NSDAP-occupied France, known as the French Forces of the Interior, and gained strategic footholds in several French colonies in Africa.

This flag came from the Loiret Region of Lorris which is south of Paris in the center of France. The flag is hand sewn from three separate pieces of fabric (blue, red, and white) and constructed of any available materials, which displays the struggles of the resistance. The 'Croix de Lorraine' or 'Cross of Lorraine' was the emblem of the Free French and was chosen by General Charles de Gaulle as the symbol of the resistance. On this flag, the cross was sewn by hand with blue fabric. The flag is embroidered with the works 'VIVE LA FRANCE - VIVE De Gaulle et nos Allies" meaning 'Long Live France-De Gaulle and our Allies'. It is extremely rare for resistance flags to have embroidered text, making this flag all the more beautiful. The flag is dirty and has some small holes in the top white fabric above the cross and in the red fabric.

Comes more than ready for further research and display.
