Original Item: Only One Available.This is a very attractive Finnish WWII 1941-1943 Pohjoisrintama - Die Nordfront, or North Front Cross, a distinctive Finnish-produced commemorative badge associated with Finnish and German personnel serving on the northern front during the Continuation War. This example is the desirable white-enamel version dated 1941-43, with the dates positioned prominently at the top of the central medallion.

The North Front Cross was not an official German military decoration in the same sense as a state-issued combat award. Rather, it was an unofficial Finnish-produced commemorative badge worn by personnel connected with operations in northern Finland and Karelia. Period examples are known in several configurations, including white and black central medallions and differing date ranges.

The badge is of multi-piece metal construction with silvered and gilt finishes and extensive multicolored enamel work. The main body takes the form of a blue enameled cross, with the arms of a Finnish-style swas. visible between its quadrants. Each of these arms bears the raised name of one of the principal northern combat sectors:

These locations correspond to important sectors of the northern Finnish-Soviet front. Petsamo lay on the Arctic approach toward Murmansk, while Salla, Kiestinki, and Uhtua formed separate operational sectors farther south. German and Finnish forces operated along this exceptionally difficult front of forests, marshland, tundra, and limited road networks beginning in 1941.

The center of the badge is particularly attractive. A white enameled circular field displays the Finnish national flag alongside the German wartime flag, with the dates:

positioned between them. Beneath the flags is the red shield of Finland bearing the Finnish lion. Around the lower portion of the medallion is the bilingual inscription:

POHJOISRINTAMA · DIE NORDFRONT

Both phrases translate essentially as “The North Front,” in Finnish and German respectively. The medallion is surrounded by a detailed gilt oak-leaf wreath. This particular combination of a white center field and the 1941-43 dates at the top corresponds with a documented early configuration of the North Front Cross.

The condition is quite pleasing considering its age and the delicate enamel construction. The rich blue enamel remains well retained across the four arms, showing scattered surface scratches. The white central enamel remains clear and presents the flags, Finnish coat of arms, dates, and lettering very well. The surrounding metal surfaces show expected finish loss, oxidation, and an attractive aged patina, particularly to the raised lettering and oak-leaf wreath.

The reverse clearly illustrates the badge’s multi-piece construction, with two rivets securing the central assembly. A threaded attachment post remains in place, but the removable screw-back retaining disc is no longer present. No maker’s mark is currently visible. Since maker markings on these badges are sometimes found on the removable screw disc, the loss of that component prevents a confident attribution to a specific manufacturer.
