Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a wonderful mid 18th Century Flintlock horse pistol, which we believe to have originally been made in Spain or Austria between 1730-1740 based on the style. The fittings are relatively ornate, with much engraving and brass inlay, even on the side plate. It also has a lovely engraved and carved stock, which also has some silver wire inlay on the grip area. All of this is very well executed, and we would love to know the maker. However, the only markings on the gun are on the barrel, which has CROWN / HG on the top three facets of the nocks form, which we have not been able to identify.
After service in Europe, it looks to have been captured or traded to Ottoman Turks, who replaced the nose end of the stock with horn, and also installed a wooden faux ramrod. This was typical of the Ottoman design, as they carried the ramrods on a strap around their neck, to avoid dropping it. The nose portion is definitely of lower workmanship than the rest of the pistol.
The pistol measures 18 inches overall, and is fitted with a 11 1/4 inch smoothbore barrel. It displays quite nicely, with a lovely color to the stock, and nice mustard color to the brass inlays on the bright iron fittings. The lock functions, however it does not currently hold at half cock, so the tumbler is worn.
A great piece of martial history, ready to display!
