  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a real sleeper! Here we have a very nice English flintlock overcoat pistol, dating to 1775-1800. It measures about 9 1/2 inches overall, and is fitted with a lovely 5 inch long brass octagonal barrel. We are offering it in “as found” condition, as this came straight from an attic in remarkably fine condition.

The breech end of the barrel has British Birmingham proof marks, the usual CROWN over "Crossed Scepters" originally used by Ketland. The top is marked R, BOXAIL, RYE. in large block letters. We were not able to find a gunmaker of that name, so it is either a retailer or, more likely, the name of the owner when first acquired . There is a town called Rye near the South Coast of Sussex and Kent in England, but just perhaps there is an American town also bearing that name.

A lovely sleeper in really nice condition! The stock bears a couple of tiny cracks from drying out over the years, and there is a chunk on the right near the muzzle that has cracked and shifted. Never messed with, it features all brass mounts including its original horn tipped ramrod, which still retains the worm screw on the rear end to unload a charged barrel (quite uncommon). The lock functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full.

A lovely English personal protection pistol from the late 18th century, ready to display!
