Original Item. Only One Available. This is an outstanding example of a Lion’s head officer’s sword manufactured by Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie of Solingen for the country of Ecuador. The lion’s head retains its ruby eyes. The blade is triple-etched and bears the seal of Ecuador on one side and a cacophony of arms on the other with floral motifs across. The sword comes in its original plated scabbard.
The ricasso is stamped behind the rain chape with the trademark "Knight's Helmet" (Ritter-helm) logo of legendary maker Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie of Solingen, over the firms initials of WKC. This company is a famous manufacturer of military swords and cutlery in Solingen, Germany - a city famous since the middle ages for its metal-working and craftsmanship in sword making. Per J. Anthony Carter's fine work GERMAN SWORD AND KNIFE MAKERS, the traditional manufacturing of swords at WKC dates back to the year 1774 when the Weyersberg first registered the ''Kings head'' as their trademark. Later in 1883 the company merged with the Kirschbaums and the company WKC was formed as it exists today.
The blade is stamped above this marking with GERMANY / KIFFE, which may be an export marking.
The hilt bears a wire-wrapped black celluloid grip, and the wire wrap is still tight. The original leather blade buffer is retained. The blade shows some minor oxidation peeking through the plating in spots, but it is still straight.
The plated scabbard retains both hanging rings but has some significant loss to the plating as shown.
An excellent example, ready for display!
