Original Early 19th Century Ornate Greek Silver Stocked Flintlock Pistol with 18th Century French Style Lock
Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. Here we have a truly magnificent flintlock pistol, made during the early 19th Century in Greece. The stock on this example is made entirely of silver, and does not have any wooden components that we can see. It is fully carved, embossed and engraved, with a multitude of different motifs. There are also areas of gold plating in the recessed portions of the stock. While the stock is most likely hollow, the pistol is relatively heavy for its size, weighing about 3lbs.
The pistol is 21 inches in overall length, and features a 13 inch long barrel, inlaid with faux London in silver, together with a silver crescent moon and star. There are also silver inlaid proof marks on left side of barrel, which could be real or just for decoration. They are not marks that we recognize, but could be researched.
The pistol was built around an ornately engraved flintlock mechanism of early 18th century "French" style, circa 1730. The lock functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full. The trigger of the pistol also appears to be a "Dragon" design, or possibly a "Lion."
Truly magnificent and of the highest quality, this flintlock pistol is beautifully made, and in excellent condition. From an old collection just disbursed in Europe this is a real peach of a find and not some cheap bazaar trash. Ready to be one of the jewels of your collection!
