Original Danish 1788 Dated Treenware Wooden Drinking Mug With Carved Cypher of King Christian VII - Reigned 1766 - 1808

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a lovely Danish Royal treenware (wooden) tankard, carved from a solid piece of wood, including the eared handle. The side bears the Danish Crown over two intertwined letter “C”s and two number “7”s, which is the Royal Cypher of King Christian VII of Denmark. Under this it is carved with R A S, and under the handle is the carved date of 1788. It stands 5 ⅝” tall, and is about 2 ¼” across the top.

The mug is in very good shape, showing some cracking at the bottom, and centuries of dirt and old polish on the exterior. Most impressive with a solid ROYAL CONNECTION.

Danish King Christian the 7th ruled from 1766 until his death in 1808, though from 1772 onwards the country was ruled by regents. He married the sister of the British King George III, Princess Caroline Matilda as a long standing Proxy obligation in 1766, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1772 basically caused by Christian’s mental state They had one son, the future KING FREDERICK VI, and a daughter Princess Louise Augusta. The remainder of King Christian's reign led to a total descent into insanity. He died in 1808, after which his son Frederick, who had been regent since 1784, was crowned as Frederick VI.
