This is a substantial hand-forged iron axe head dating approximately to the late 17th through 18th century, retaining a repeated blacksmith’s or maker’s mark on both sides. The head survives in heavily oxidized relic condition with deep pitting, edge loss, and damage to the rear portion, while the original wooden haft is no longer present. Its form and repeated stamped marks are consistent with early modern European working axes, although the precise country of manufacture cannot presently be established.

As the axe head was excavated, there is the expected heavy pitting and oxidation present. It does not appear that any attempts were made to restore or clean it, just the way you like to find them, “as is”. The length of the head of the axe measures approximately 5 1/2 inches with an edge width of 4 1/2 inches. The edge has heavy nicking from oxidation. There is some breakage on the spine. Both sides near the bottom throat is stamped with two circles with a three-pronged symbol inside. A good research project.

Stamped forge marks are well documented on European axes of the 17th and 18th centuries. Archaeological examples from this period show a wide variety of circular, floral, cross, pellet, and geometric punch marks, many of which remain unattributed to a specific smith or workshop. Historic Jamestowne, for example, records several 17th-century axes with circular and repeated maker’s stamps whose actual makers remain unidentified.

The greatest collector interest lies in the combination of the early hand-forged construction, substantial surviving profile, and matching blacksmith’s marks struck on both sides. Although its precise workshop and national origin remain unresolved, the axe is a useful study piece representing the locally forged iron tools that formed an essential part of everyday European material culture during the late 17th and 18th centuries.
