Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very complete Cold War-era Czechoslovak PNV-57 military night-vision set dated 1964, consisting of the binocular night-vision goggles mounted to their padded tanker-style headgear, rear-mounted power unit, matching transit chest, original serial-numbered manual, extension cord, spare bulbs, cleaning accessories, and a later 1969 inventory inspection sheet. The goggles, chest, and manual are all associated by serial number 23084, making this an especially well-matched surviving set. The unit has not been electrically tested, so no claim is made regarding present functionality.
The PNV-57, also encountered under the transliteration PNW-57, was a Soviet-designed active infrared night-vision system developed primarily for armored vehicle crews and later produced or used by several Eastern Bloc nations. The system relied on infrared illumination rather than modern passive image intensification, allowing a vehicle driver or crewman to see through the binocular unit when paired with infrared-filtered headlights or another IR source. Surviving Czechoslovak examples are known with locally applied markings and production dates, making this 1964 set consistent with Czech manufacture or assembly of the Soviet-pattern system.
The helmet retains the goggles mounted to the front with the battery pack mounted at the back. The right side of the goggles are marked:

These same markings are replicated on the lid of the transit chest. The helmet appears in good order with the leather straps for the battery still intact and unbroken, with the power cord still in good condition.
Included in the chest are a a dual-split extension cord that we were able to plug the helmet cord into, two small spare bulbs in their boxes, a 1969-dated inventory inspection sheet, and the original manual for the goggles, correctly serial numbered 23084 on the first page.
The inner lid of the transit chest retains the small pocket on one side with a cleaning cloth and small plastic container with a solid black puck inside. There is a warning label attached to the interior lid. The transit chest measures 16 ¾ x 8 x 8 ½” when closed and retains the canvas carrying strap though it appears weak, so please do not use it. There is a name painted on the side of the chest, MEGFELEO.
This appears to be a rendering of the Hungarian word megfelelő, meaning “appropriate,” “suitable,” or “acceptable.” It is therefore more likely to represent an inspection, condition, or acceptance marking than a personal name.
The PNV-57 belonged to the first generation of practical Eastern Bloc vehicle night-vision systems. These early active infrared devices required a source of invisible infrared illumination, commonly provided by filtered vehicle headlights, and were particularly suited to armored vehicle crews operating at night. The binocular unit offered modest magnification and a relatively restricted field of view compared with later passive night-vision systems, but represented an important step in Cold War armored-vehicle technology.
This set is especially appealing for its unusually complete and matching configuration. The 1964-dated goggles, serial L-23084, matching transit chest, manual numbered 23084, later 1969 inspection document, rear power pack, extension lead, spare bulbs, cleaning accessories, and original carrying chest all remain together. The set has not been tested electrically and should therefore be considered a display and research example unless inspected by someone familiar with vintage high-voltage night-vision equipment.
