Original Civil War Era French Mle 1840 Percussion Artillery Carbine - Carabine de Munition

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a somewhat rare French Model of 1840 Artillery Carbine with a back action lock, just received out of a large collection. French percussion small arms were imported in large numbers by the Confederate States during the Civil war, which is probably how it ended up in the United States. It is fully steel mounted, but unfortunately years and cleaning have obliterated most markings. There is still number 544 on both the barrel and cleaning rod.

The barrel is 32" in length and the artillery carbine is 48" overall. Powder burn and wear have obliterated all of the markings that would normally be on the barrel and stock. The all iron mounts have no finish remaining on the metalwork. Very sound walnut stock with the expected wear and dents from age.

The lock functions, but will fire at the half-cock position, so it definitely needs some work. The barrel-ended ramrod is still still present, and stowed below the barrel. The rear sight works correctly, and has various holes for different ranges.

A very nice early French Percussion Carbine, ready to display!
