Original Item: Only One Available. This is a totally inert non-firing BATF compliant deactivated non-functional Chinese Type 69 Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher, a variant / clone of the Soviet RPG-7. It is marked with Chinese characters and arsenal markings on the trigger assembly and optical sight. The launcher has been deactivated to BATF specifications by drilling out the ignition mechanism with a 1/2" drill bit and welding a 1/2" steel bar across the bore in its place. It also has had a bore-width hole drilled through the left side above the trigger mechanism. A rocket can insert into the front of the tube but the tube is obstructed beyond that point to prevent anything from traveling through.
This example comes with an inert Soviet Rocket Round without a tail and some fantastic accessories. Not Available For Export.
The original red brown rear housing is still intact, which looks to be made from resin impregnated fabric, not bakelite as used by the Soviet and Eastern Block countries. The aluminum trigger group is in lovely condition, and has the correct Chinese markings, which read as follows:-
69 - 40火
020241
(107)
The top line indicates that it is a Type 69 launcher in 40mm. There is not much information available on the Chinese manufacturers, other than this example was made at "Factory 107". There does not appear to be any serial number on the tube, though there are arsenal markings in many areas. The trigger group is still able to cock and dry fire, and the safety works as well.
While the Type 96 was based on the Soviet RPG-7, it departs from the original design with regards to carrying and aiming. There is no front grip on the Type 96, and instead has a bipod to use for both prone fire and to use structures as a support. It features flip up sights similar to the RPG-7, but there is also a carry handle behind the rear sight. Definitely some interesting changes meant to help with better handling of the launcher. It is overall in very good condition, with the original paint well retained, looking much as it did when it was still in service.
The launcher comes with an original Soviet PG-7 HEAT type Inert Rocket Round, which does not have the fin assembly, but still has the original screw on bakelite end cap. As it has no tail, the round cannot be properly inserted into the launcher once the cap is removed. There are some markings around the front cap on the rocket, which is really in great shape. These non-Chinese rounds are very difficult to find. A really great display opportunity!
Along with the Soviet inert rocket, the launcher also comes with some great accessories, some of which we have not seen before! The launcher is fitted with a lovely Chinese optical sight, which still has great optics and an intact graticule. It is marked correctly with 69式 (69 Type) on the right side, and still has the switch on the left, though the rubber cover has torn off. It does have the front optic cover, and the rubber eye piece is still supple. There is also a lovely sling attached to the right side of the launcher, giving yet another option for carrying the launcher.
Additionally, there is a cleaning brush pull through with an attached rope, a pouch with some cleaning tools in it, and a three piece cleaning tool, which we are not quite sure of the function on. It looks to have two configurations, one possibly to help push out an item stuck in the bore, and another that looks to have some kind of bore hone on the end. Definitely some great potential for further research here!
Overall condition is very good and the look is iconic! A great display set with some very hard to find accessories!
History of the RPG:
The RPG-7 (Russian: РПГ-7, Ручной Противотанковый Гранатомёт – Ruchnoy Protivotankoviy Granatomyot) is a widely-produced, portable, unguided, shoulder-launched, anti-tank rocket-propelled grenade launcher. It works by launching a 40mm rocket propelled grenade using the gases escaping the muzzle to expel the rocket from the tube. Originally the RPG-7 and its predecessor, the RPG-2, were designed by the Soviet Union and are now manufactured by the Bazalt company. The weapon has the GRAU index 6G3.
The English-language term "RPG", meaning "rocket-propelled grenade", though frequently encountered and reasonably descriptive, is not based on a literal translation, which would be "Hand Anti-Tank Grenade Launcher".
The ruggedness, simplicity, low cost, and effectiveness of the RPG-7 has made it the most widely used anti-tank weapon in the world. Currently around 40 countries use the weapon, and it is manufactured in a number of variants by nine countries. It is also popular with irregular and guerrilla forces. The RPG has been used in almost all conflicts across all continents since the mid-1960s from the Vietnam War to the present day War in Afghanistan. The RPG-7 was first delivered to the Soviet Army in 1961.
Accurate firing is difficult at ranges over 300 meters and with the RPG-7 the phrase "the closer the better" has always been true. During the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan the mujahideen tended to use the weapon at ranges of less than 80 meters. They were used in the Vietnam war to counter the introduction of the lightly armored M113.
The RPG-7 was used by the Provisional Irish Republican Army in Northern Ireland from 1969 to 2005, most notably in Lurgan, County Armagh, where it was used against British Army observation posts and the towering military base at Kitchen Hill in the town. The IRA also used them in Catholic areas of West Belfast against British Army armored personnel carriers and Army forward operating bases (FOB). Beechmount Avenue was renamed "RPG Avenue" because it was chosen many times by the IRA to mount rocket attacks.
In Mogadishu, Somalia, rocket-propelled grenades were used to down two US Black hawk helicopters.
The mujaheddin (in Afghanistan) have formed armored-vehicle hunter/killer teams that work together with as many as 15 RPGs to destroy armored vehicles.
