Based in Quebec City, Quebec, the unit began recruiting during the winter of 1915/16. After sailing to England in November 1916, the battalion was absorbed by the 148th Battalion, CEF, 5th Pioneers, and the 20th Reserve Battalion in December 1916. The 171st (Quebec Rifles) Battalion, CEF had one Officer Commanding: Lieut-Col. Sir Wm. Price.
This is one of the most tremendous WWI Recruitment posters we have ever offered, one that we could not find a single comparable example of, so we are confident in calling this example one-of-a-kind. This poster was produced to garner recruitment for the 171st Battalion (Quebec Rifles), CEF. The poster features a Bugler in the 171st, with the correct cap badge, over the text:
ANSWER THE CALL
FALL IN
DON’T YOU HEAR THE BUGLE CALLING?
JOIN THE
QUEBEC RIFLES
171ST OVERSEAS BATTALION
SIR W. PRICE, Lt.-Col.
HEADQUARTERS:
72 ½ Peter St. or Y.M.C.A., QUEBEC
CHRONICLE PRINT
The center of the poster even features the cap insignia of the 171st. We’ve never offered as tremendous of a WWI Canadian poster as this example, and we will never see the likes of it again. The frame is tremendous and measures 26¼ x 36”. There is no serious wear to the poster besides fold marks, and it has a great patina overall. Perfect for any WWI collection!
