Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an excellent and scarce Canadian two-place medal bar for a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police during the reign of George V. This medal bar would’ve been made and worn around 1935-1936. The set consists of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Long Service Medal & the George V Silver Jubilee Medal, with the same medal bar in miniature. The back of the medal bar shows that the brooch itself is also Sterling, and was put together by Scully Ltd. of Montreal. This set is especially scarce considering that only 388 of the RCMP Long Service medals were issued under George V.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Long Service Medal was established in 1934 during the reign of King George V and was the first Canadian honour created specifically to recognize long and exemplary service performed within Canada. The George V version was issued only during the earliest period of the decoration, with specialist RCMP medal research recording just 388 examples of the George V type before the accession of George VI.

The RCMP Long Service medal is hand-stamped on the rim with P.R. FORDE, who we have identified as Percy R. Forde, who during World War II served as Assistant Commissioner of the entire Royal Canadian Mounted Police. We have found several newspaper articles discussing the transfer of. Inspector Forde first joined the force in 1910, serving almost continuously in Regina as head of the auditing department. He was transferred to Ottawa in 1934, and in 1943 was promoted to Assistant Commissioner. He retired in February 1945 after 34 years of service. His retirement article notes that “He is in possession of the King’s Silver Jubilee Medal and the Royal Canadian Long Service Medal”, the two medals on this bar.

The King George V Silver Jubilee Medal of 1935 marked the 25th anniversary of King George V’s accession to the throne and was awarded to selected officials, public servants, members of the armed forces, police personnel, and others throughout Britain and the Commonwealth. A total of 7,500 were allocated to Canadians.

The ribbons of both medals are in great shape, as are the ribbons of the mini medals.

Percy R. Forde’s career places this group well above the level of an anonymous police long-service pairing. From his documented service as an Inspector and Paymaster/Quartermaster at Regina to his eventual promotion to Assistant Commissioner during WWII, Forde spent more than three decades with the RCMP during a formative period in the Force’s history. The combination of the P.R. FORDE naming, the scarce George V Long Service Medal, King George V Silver Jubilee Medal, Scully-mounted sterling brooch, matching miniature bar, and contemporary retirement reference listing both awards makes this an unusually well-supported senior RCMP officer’s medal group.
