Original British WWII Scotland Police Glengarry Side Cap - SEMPER VIGILO

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The glengarry bonnet, or side cap, is a traditional Scots cap made of thick-milled woollen material, decorated with a toorie (small pom pom) on top, frequently a rosette cockade on the left side, and ribbons hanging behind. It is normally worn as part of Scottish military or civilian Highland dress, either formal or informal, as an alternative to the Balmoral bonnet or tam o' shanter. For many years it was the standard headgear of all highland regiments in the British Army, except for the Black Watch, who retained a blue Balmoral Bonnet.

This example is in great shape, and has the red, white, and black "diced" checkerboard pattern on the sides, with a nice rosette on the left side. This has a lovely embroidered cap badge, which has a Thistle blossom in the middle for Scotland, under a King's Crown, with leaves to the side. Under this is the motto SEMPER VIGILO (Always Watching/Vigilant), the current motto and badge of the Scotland Police force. This was originally the badge of one of the smaller Scottish police forces, but was adopted by the overall force when it amalgamated in the late 20th century. We unfortunately have not been able to find out which police group it represented during WWII.

The cap does show some light wear, and the body does show some small moth nips, but is overall solid. There is no size marked, but it seems to relatively large, probably around a 58-59cm.

Very attractive and ready to add to your Scottish collection!
