  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is the tremendous uniform jacket of RAF Sergeant Donald Leslie James Rolfe (1601823), Wireless Operator and Air Gunner with No. 578 Squadron. On August 13th, 1944, while on a night raid to Russelsheim to bomb the Opel motor factory, Rolfe’s aircraft, Halifax BIII NA604, encountered night fighters from Brussels all the way to the target, and crashed at Mönchbruch, Germany with all hands lost.

The uniform jacket is a standard enlisted example with Sergeant’s chevrons on both sleeves below a Wireless Operator insignia under RAF Sleeve eagles. Above the left breast pocket is a nice Air Gunner’s Wing set (AG). The jacket retains its original belt and is in great condition. The interior has no tags that we could find, with the name D. ROLFE written in red on one of the interior pockets.

The jacket comes with several pages of printed research on Rolfe and his aircraft with a photograph of his grave as well.

This is a great identified RAF uniform to an airman killed in action during the 2nd World War. It requires a great deal more research to better commemorate the life of this brave soldier. Comes ready for further research and display.
