Original British WWII Rose Top Port of London Authority Blitz “Blackout” Police Bobby Helmet

Item Description

Original Item: One Only. The Traditional Bobby helmet was named after the creator of the British Police Force, SIR ROBERT PEEL, who became Prime Minister under Queen Victoria. This early version, known as a "Rose Top," features a blacked brass top fitting, in the shape of a rose, hence the name. This version was issued during the WWII London "Blitz", when German bombings were an almost daily occurrence. Due to this the helmet plate and rose are both "blackout" style, brass with a dark oxide coating.

The front Helmet plate has the coat of arms of the Port of London Authority, with their motto, FLOREAT IMPERII PORTUS (May the Port of the Empire Flourish). Under this are their initials P.L.A. on a large banner.

Almost untouched from long storage, this was used in London's east end, now known as the "Docklands" of Wapping and the East India docks. The chin strap is completely missing, and it's possible that it was never issued with one. The original leather liner is intact but somewhat worn.

A total sleeper from the hell of the WWII London Blitz, ready to display!
