Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very unusual British WWII-era handmade Royal Air Force-themed monkey doll, dressed in a miniature RAF-style pilot’s uniform complete with overseas cap, necktie, stitched buttons, and pilot’s wings. The doll came with provenance attributing its manufacture to J. K. Farnell & Co. of London, one of Britain’s best-known early soft-toy manufacturers. We have not located a surviving maker’s label or documentary record on this individual example, so the Farnell identification is preserved as a collection attribution rather than stated as confirmed manufacture.
The doll measures approximately 14 inches long. Its arms are attached with small stitched fabric tendons or joints, allowing them to move freely. The tail is also fabric constructed and now shows some fraying from age and handling.
The miniature overseas cap is stitched at the rear of the head but can come loose and be repositioned. One side carries a crude hand-stitched RAF marking. The uniform includes a stitched tie beneath the jacket, rows of stitched buttons, and a small representation of RAF pilot’s wings on the chest.
Construction is entirely handmade, with irregular stitching and simplified details that give the doll a distinctly personal appearance. Whether it was produced as a wartime souvenir, serviceman-made novelty, gift, or decorative mascot cannot presently be confirmed, but its RAF theme and period-style uniform details are unmistakable.
This is an unusual piece of WWII-era RAF-related toy or folk-art material, notable for its 14-inch handmade construction, articulated arms, RAF-marked overseas cap, miniature pilot’s uniform, stitched wings, and surviving Farnell collection attribution. Whether it was produced commercially by Farnell, specially made as a wartime novelty or mascot, or created independently cannot presently be proven, but its RAF theme and surviving period-style textile construction make it a particularly distinctive piece.
