Original Item. Only One Available. The Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) was the women's branch of the British Army during the Second World War. It was formed on 9 September 1938, initially as a women's voluntary service, and existed until 1 February 1949, when it was merged into the Women's Royal Army Corps. The ATS had its roots in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC), which was formed in 1917 as a voluntary service. During the First World War its members served in a number of jobs including clerks, cooks, telephonists and waitresses. The WAAC was disbanded after four years in 1921.
This is a very scarce WWII British ATS Poster, titled “Radiolocation”, designed by Adram Games OBE, RDI. Abram Games OBE, RDI was a British graphic designer. The style of his work – refined but vigorous compared to the work of contemporaries – has earned him a place in the pantheon of the best of 20th-century graphic designers. In acknowledging his power as a propagandist, he claimed, "I wind the spring and the public, in looking at the poster, will have that spring released in its mind." Because of the length of his career – over six decades – his work is essentially a record of the era's social history. Some of Britain's most iconic images include those by Games. An example is the "Join the ATS" poster of 1941, nicknamed the "blonde bombshell" recruitment poster. His work is recognised for its "striking colour, bold graphic ideas, and beautifully integrated typography". The poster measures 20 x 30” and is in good shape overall with just some small tears along the edges.
The poster depicts two hands in white silhouette, operating two letter 'O's in 'radiolocation' as dials. A line of light connects the poster title to a damaged German aircraft in flight overhead. The plane trails smoke, set against bands of black and white. This is to highlight the importance of the jobs done by the ATS during the war. The bottom reads Printed for H.M. Stationery Office by Greycaine Limited, Watford and London. 51. 1113 P.R43.
A great poster, ready for further research and display.
