Original British WWI Trench Warfare Gas Rattle- Dated 1916

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. During WW1 trench warfare and the terror of a gas attack was continually present. Due to the close quarters and explosions so much noise was always occurring that it became essential to find a unique way of warning the troops that a gas attack was under way. Whistles, sirens and all forms of explosive reports were hourly occurrences so the introduction of the gas rattle was adopted.

Basically, this is an all wood sprung loaded bird repellant device that emitted an extremely annoying sound but most that assuredly got everyone's attention and the troops then knew to put on their gas masks or hoods.

This is a slightly unique example in shape and bears the maker's name with date "COLE 1916" a Birmingham Contractor best known for leatherwork. Unusual but essential for World War One trench warfare, offered in excellent condition and fully operational.
