  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is a rare set of World War I 'Spicer' Anti gas goggles first issued to the British soldier in the 1915 period along with the P helmet. These were made to be worn in a tear gas attack when eye protection was required instead of the gas helmet. The goggles were named the 'Spicer' goggles after their designer in the gas warfare department. Cheap & simple to produce they were made from two layers of fairly stiff khaki cotton that were stitched together with two celluloid eyepieces sandwiched & stitched between.

This set is a good crude example of the pattern with good stitching and well-retained celluloid eyepieces. We are not sure if the celluloid was replaced at one point. The rear shows some oxidation staining on the soft flannelette. The tie strings are retained and also show wear and staining.

The set comes in its original paper carrying case with a lace looped through the brass grommet to the back. The lace looped through the grommet appears to have been added much later as it glows under blacklight. However the rest of the set does not glow, and the set was authenticated by Jeff Shrader of Advance Guard Militaria.

    The pouch reads:

Apply the Goggles placing the eye pieces
As near the centre of the eyes as possible. Then
Cross the tape at the sack of the neck and
Bring round over the forehead. Tie off over
The edge of the material so as to press it
Firmly. Mould the wire in the lower edge
By pressing with fingers so as to make it fit
Tight round the tip of the nose. Protection
Against Irritant Gases is improved by
    Smearing Vaseline around between the
Edges of the Goggles and the Skin.

A very rare set, the first we have ever offered. Ready for display.
