  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a large Cow Horn Powder Flask, measuring 12 ½ inches in overall length. While possibly intended for a musket or other small arms, this size would sometimes be used for cannon priming. The end of the horn is fitted with a rounded wooden bottom plug which unscrews, and the threading is all hand-carved. The spout on this example has a lever to open it, very intricate for the period, and likely dating it to the early 19th century, for the War of 1812 era.

The horn has a lovely patina overall and the threaded wooden knobs are very difficult to find intact. There are some cracks and wear in the threading as shown but it still screws in without issue. On the base of the horn are the carved initials G.L.L. which is original to the period.

The side of the horn in engraved with the “coat of arms” for the 60th Regiment of Foot, with 60 within a belt under a crown, the belt bearing the quote “Honi soit qui mal y pense”, or “shamed be (the person) who thinks evil of it”. We believe this to be a later engraving which was done for display purposes, but it still looks quite tremendous and will make for a lovely display.

The brass spout shows cracking and some minor material loss but the lever still works very well. There is a leather carrying strap attached to the two iron loops which appears of the period.

An outstanding British horn from the Napoleonic era, ready for further research and display.
