Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good example of a 1970s NATO British Fairbairn-Sykes commando dagger, with a blacked alloy handle and original scabbard. As brass was a "strategic material," only the early examples of the third pattern have brass handles, with later war produced models having copper plated and blacked alloy handles. Unlike many we see, this example is actually maker marked on the underside of the cross guard, though it was not stamped well, as often seen:
SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND
The knives varied somewhat in size, and this example measures 11 5/8", with a 7" blade. This example comes with an interesting thicker belt scabbard, with the belt loop and a normal leather retaining strap at the top, instead of the normal elastic.
The condition of the knife is good, still with relatively sharp edges, and much of the original finish on the blade. It does show sharpening on the edges from use in service. The plain blued steel cross guard is tight on the blade with no wobble and some surface oxidation, made from stamped steel. It shows some light wear to the finish, as does the handle, which has had the blacked finish wear off the ridges on the grip. The pommel has lost much of its finish as shown.
The original scabbard is in fair condition, with the expected wear from being used in service. The leather is well broken in and soft, with some creasing but no tearing. The belt loop is present and pliable.
An increasingly hard to find knife that would fit into any British Post-WWII collection.
