Original British Victorian Tower Marked Sappers & Miners Short Musket for Engineers - dated 1842
Original Item: Only One Available. This is an extremely scarce British Tower-marked Sappers and Miners Short Musket, issued for home use, measuring 42 1/2 inches in overall length. It is very similar to the EIC P1942 "Model E" Sappers & Miners short musket, except that it is about 6 inches shorter. Fitted with a 27" barrel, this musket has all brass mounts; butt plate, no throat pipe, two ramrod pipes and nose cap. The front of the musket features a "Hanovarian Pattern" catch, which should work with the same "Pattern E" type Sappers & Miners sword bayonets.
The lock is correctly marked CROWN / V - R, for Queen Victoria, with TOWER 1842 underneath. There is also the "Lock Viewer's Mark" over the date. The barrel is marked as well, with the CROWN / T P "Tower Proof" and another CROWN / BROAD ARROW "Viewed" marking. There are other proof marks, which are some what obscured by wear. Right right side of the butt stock has a faint BROAD ARROW / B O marking for the Board of Ordnance, indicating issue for home use. There is even a rack number of C / 1903 on the butt plate tang.
The musket presents very well, and the lock functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full. It still retains both sling swivels and the correct cleaning rod. There definitely is some wear and past pitting on the barrel, showing this definitely did see long service.
Original home use tower made examples of these are so very hard to find, especially in this good condition. Ready to display!
