  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice original British Royal Army Medical Corps officer’s blue cloth Home Service helmet, dating to the closing years of the Victorian period and retaining its gilt brass fittings, ball finial, scaled chinstrap, officer-quality liner, and maker’s label for J.B. Johnstone. The helmet is not size-marked but measures approximately size 6 ⅞.

The front of the helmet has a plate with scrolls reading ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS. The body consists of cork covered with blue wool, trimmed with brass. The liner is calfskin leather and silk. The interior of the front and rear visor is trimmed with fine green dyed leather, with the interior body liner with canvas. The rear visor is missing some of the green dyed leather as shown with some edge trim loss as well. The interior vent in the crown has a maker’s label around it reading:

    J.B. JOHNSTONE
    MILITARY TAILOR
    34, Sackville St. LONDON.
32, Molesworth St. Dublin & Lahora

J.B. Johnstone was an established military tailor with premises in both London and Dublin. Period examples of British officer’s Home Service helmets survive with Johnstone labels identifying the firm at 34 Sackville Street, London, together with a Molesworth Street, Dublin address, confirming its role as a supplier of privately purchased officer equipment during the late Victorian period.

This is a particularly strong surviving example of a late Victorian Royal Army Medical Corps officer’s Home Service helmet, combining the distinctive RAMC ball finial and corps plate with high-quality officer construction and a clearly identified J.B. Johnstone retailer’s label. Its 1898-or-later corps designation and Victorian-style fittings place it naturally within the short period between the creation of the RAMC and the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. There is some minor imperfections but overall it has survived well.
