Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely blue wool cloth covered helmet with a cork body, silver alloy fittings throughout, to include the large helmet plate with Queen's crown. The interior shows a tan cloth lining with a label from Dolan & Co. of London, an intact brown leather sweatband showing scuffing and dryness from age. The spike itself is now a bit loose but displays very nicely.
The Oxford University Rifle Volunteer Corps initially became a part of the volunteer battalions of the Oxfordshire Light Infantry on its inception in 1881 and, in 1887, was renamed the 1st (Oxford University) Volunteer Battalion or the Oxford University Volunteers. The volunteer battalions as a whole eventually saw active service in South Africa, during the Second Boer War of 1899-1902.
The helmet is complete with all of the correct silver alloy mounts and original chin strap. The interior shows heavy wear but is in great shape overall. The leather trim along the edge shows cracking and crazing.
An excellent example, the first we’ve had for this unit. Ready for display.
