  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very rough but complete private purchased British Officer’s pith helmet in its original steel transit tin painted with the name R.P. Keith and an Elders & Fyffes, Limited of London train ticket with Direct Service to the West Indies & Central America. The helmet itself is heavily stained on the exterior, likely from the japanning of the interior of the case coming off onto the helmet, but we cannot say for sure. The helmet has a lovely quilted body with a chinstrap that travels through the crown and across the exterior through the vent.

The interior of the helmet has a lovely red silk interior with a gold-colored maker’s label:

    ARMY & NAVY CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY
    LIMITED
    LONDON

The Army and Navy Co-operative Society Ltd was incorporated on the 15th of September, 1871. It was formed by a consortium of army and naval officers for the supply of goods to its members at the lowest possible rates. This model was based on that used by two earlier co-operatives - the Civil Service Supply Association and the Civil Service Co-operative Society.

The green wool under the brim is heavily eaten at and hangs off as a result. The sweatband is in good order and is pliable. The helmet is not size-marked but is likely a 7 ⅛”.

The original steel transit tin is heavily dented as shown and the train label is heavily torn away but the name R.P. Keith can still be seen. There is heavy scratching and denting. The closure still closes but we do not have the key.

A very rare example in rough condition, ready to research further and display.
