Original British Victorian Era High-Quality Officer's Sword with All-Brass Tropical Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very fascinating Sword! Its slightly curved 32" blade is "Quill-Backed," and shows evidence of having considerable engravings down it's length now almost entirely worn away. The sword boasts the more elegant "Lion's Head" Pommel with very distinctive Lion's mane draped down the back strap. The bronze hilt was no doubt originally mercury gilt, which has now worn away. The half basket guard contains a Lion grasping a Crown over elaborate initials all surrounded with a wreath of foliage. It also has a "fold-away" hand guard on one side, which allows it to sit more comfortably against the hip in the scabbard.

The heavy scabbard is constructed of all Brass indicating that the Sword was intended for use in Tropical climates of India or Africa. Scabbard is in great shape, except for a small hole near the lower hanger loop. The unknown (to IMA) Crest on the guard, which should identify the family or Regiment, presents a problem for clear identification, making this an excellent research opportunity.

The grip is brass wire bound grip is sharkskin, which unfortunately is missing on about 2/3 of the grip, showing the underlying wood. The wood however has a great patina, showing this was definitely carried and cared for over a long period of time.
