Born in 1833, he joined the East India Company army and served during the Siege of Delhi in 1857 and later at the Relief of Agra where he captured an enemy standard for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross for valor.

He transferred to the 1st Sikh Irregular Cavalry and took part in the Reliefs of Cawnpore and Lucknow. He became the Commanding Officer in 1858 and the Regiment soon became known as "PROBYN'S HORSE".

He served in the China War of 1860 and later in his illustrious Military career he embarked on a Court Career becoming Keeper of the Privy Purse and Comptroller of the Household. He died, aged 91 in 1924.
