Original British Victorian 11th Light Dragoons Named Horse Hoof Inkwell from the 2nd Anglo-Sikh War - Dated 1848

Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a quality Hallmarked Silver mounted Inkwell made from a Horse's Hoof, the mount ZEPHYR of Lieutenant Colonel Sir William HAVELOCK, who lived from 1793 - 1848. He was leading the 14th Light Dragoons in the Charge at the battle of RAMNAGAR on November 22nd 1848, during the 2nd Anglo-Sikh War. Sadly Lt. Colonel Havelock and his horse were killed in this battle.
As often happened, a hoof of his mount "ZEPHYR" was recovered from from the fallen horse to account for the loss of the animal, which was a military regulation in such an event. As a tribute to his family, the Hoof was then mounted in Sterling Silver, with hallmarks, and engraved commemorating the event and returned to the Regiments English Depot for display in the Officer's Mess. The lid of the container reads:

In overall lovely display condition this lidded container still acts as a great reminder of the actions and death of a famous British Dragoon Officer. Hallmarks include a Queen Victoria "Young Head" stamp under the lid, as well as others. Ready to display and research!
