Original British P-1879 Martini-Henry Sawback Artillery Sword Bayonet

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Adopted in 1879 this Sword Bayonet was issued with a blade length of over 25" so could it be utilized as both a short sword as well as bayonet. It was intended for use with the .450/577 Martini-Henry artillery carbine and provided the trooper with a longer reach.

The saw back, although looking menacing, was intended for cutting timber beams used in artillery emplacements. This bayonet also fits many of the Martini-Henry infantry rifles that have a bayonet lug (stand) on the side of the upper barrel band. No Scabbard is included.

The blade bears numerous official military markings including WD (War Department), inspection stamps and an issue date of 95 for 1895. Blade shows some wear and age patina of slight staining with some minor pitting overall. The checkered hard leather grips are in very good condition. A hard to find and very desirable bayonet, correct for any Martini-Henry enthusiast or collector.
