Original British Naval Wood Rum Keg - Circa 1790
Original Item: Only One Available. This style of small wooden keg was used all over Europe by various Navies for transporting liqueur most notably Brandy by the French and Rum by the British.
This example bearing a branded Broad Arrow was British for use with neat rum that was then cut with fresh water in a pail and issued every day to the ship's compliment. This mixture was known as GROG.
The wood of the keg is somewhat dry from age and could only hold liquid now after an extensive soaking to swell the wood staves. It has a latter carry handle added and the two iron outer barrel hoops are now missing.
Measures 11" x 7.5" X 6.5 " Oval
Clearly having served a lifetime of service making it a scarce 18th century item.
