  • Original Item: One of a Kind. This is fascinating! This is a very interesting silver plated steel tinder or snuff box, measuring 2 3/4" x 1 3/4" with a hinged lid. The top bears a fouled anchor amid foliage, engraved or etched, but now quite faint. It still locks closed correctly, though the button must be pressed quite hard to open it.

The interior of the lid a very old label has been pasted in stating

    Granduncle - Mother's
    John Tarts'
    Tinder Box carried
    at Trafalgar with
    Nelson On H.M.S. Victory

Records show that John Tart was in fact an ordinary seaman that was at the battle of Trafalgar with Admiral Lord Nelson in 1805.

A fine naval item from Nelson's greatest victory.
