  • Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very nice officer's private purchase rifled flintlock pistol, all iron mounted with a lovely octagonal barrel. It is marked Oakes on the lock plate, a known maker of private purchase pistols during the Napoleonic era. Oakes and his associate Colley are listed as gunmakers at number 5, Oxford St., London, 1799-1802, and doubtless worked elsewhere in the surrounding time period. We have seen several pistols from this maker that cover a pretty wide variety of styles.

This lovely pistol is full stocked and has all engraved iron mountings, with a gorgeous stock and silver shield-shaped escutcheon on the back of the grip. This actually is marked with initials that look to read G C, something we rarely see! It features an octagonal barrel of 9" with an overall length of 14 ¾". The barrel is marked with Pre-1813 CROWN / P "Proof" and CROWN / V "Viewed" markings from the London Gun company, correct for this era of pistol. It comes complete with a lovely horn-tipped wooden ramrod, which definitely looks to be original.

The pistol is in lovely condition, with a nice matured patina on the metalwork, and a lovely stock, which has great checkering around the grip. It does show some cracking on the right front wood line, and there is a crack running from the rear lock screw to the breech. There is a nickel silver ornament on the left side which we believe also serves to stabilize this crack. The lock is in good shape and functional, holding at half cock and firing at full.

A lovely example of an officer's private purchase flintlock pistol, ready to research and display!
