Original British Napoleonic Era P-1800 Baker Flintlock Rifle with Sword Bayonet - circa 1805

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is the very best example company director Christian Cranmer has seen in his 50 years in this business, both here an in England and it has been living with me for more than twenty years. It is a great English Classic immortalized by BERNARD CORNWELL in his wonderful series of SHARPE Novels.

Our example is almost perfect, it is all brass mounted, a wonderful near perfect walnut stock which comes up to the muzzle which terminates with a brass nose cap. The butt has the brass expected patch box and the intricate trigger guard has the brass rear extension to mimic a pistol grip. There are just two ramrod pipes, there never was a throat pipe and the button headed original ramrod is still present. There is a small sliver of wood missing from the very front directly behind where the brass bayonet grips extends back to. Easily restored but I never had it done as it probably is a result of combat or usage.

The just over 30" Barrel retains its original flip back sight and British Proof marks of CROWN / GR and the Viewing mark. There is evidence of pitting from powder burns at the right rear of the barrel and some in the pan, otherwise near perfect. The flintlock mechanism has the CROWN over G.R. with TOWER across the tail. The side of the stock by the side plate is also marked CROWN / J R / W F, but we are not entirely sure what these mean.

As stated this is the most appealing and best condition true Baker Rifle we have ever seen. It also comes with its original pattern brass hilted Sword Bayonet with groves in the grip and an un-fullered blade of 22 1/2" in length. There is an H / 4 Proof mark just above the cross guard scallop. The bayonet makers, name often found on the top of the blade in capital letters directly in front of the brass cross guard, has largely worn away but remnants of the upper case letters are evident at the edge of the blade. There are also traces of a regimental designation on the scallop, but they are all but worn away.

This really is a great piece, and something the likes of which we will most likely not offer again. Unfortunately company director Christian Cranmer cannot keep everything for his collection, so we offer this to the collectors market. Ready to display!
