Original British Napoleonic Era M-1801 Tower-Marked Short Sea Service Flintlock Pistol - c.1805
Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Here is a rather rare version of the Classic British Royal Naval Sea Service Flintlock Pistol of Admiral Lord Nelson's time during the Napoleonic Wars. Officially this was the Model of 1801, with very slight changes to the previous Sea Service Pistols dating as far back as the 1720's. This is the Model used at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
What makes this pistol special is that it is one of few remaining Sea Service pistols that was Officially shortened from a 12" length barrel to a 9" barrel, which was the new length of the Dragoon pistols including the NEW LAND models, which were adopted after 1810. Gradually all long flintlock pistols were then faded out and by 1815, the time of the Battle of Waterloo, all military Flintlock pistols then in use were produced with 9" barrels.
This pistol started life about 1805 with the 12" barrel and was shortened by Official Order probably before 1812. As it happens these shortened models have always been the most difficult to find. Fully marked with Crown over G.R. and TOWER on the lock plate tail as well as proofs on the barrel. There is also a Broad Arrow / B. O. for Board of Ordnance stamped into the wood stock. These pistols were fitted with a large belt hook on the left side opposite the lock so a sailor could use his hands for climbing the yardarm or servicing the cannons during battle.
A fine example of a scarce issue of Sea Service Flintlock Pistol. Stocks and metal work are all in great condition, with some great flame on the wrist of the stock. Lock action is strong, and holds at half-cock correctly.
Fully cleaned, complete with belt hook and ready to display!
