Item Description
Original Item: Only one available. This is a standard British EIC Cavalry Pistol adopted in 1843 fitted with is known as the "new series side lock". This pistol replaced the Model of 1840 that had the "old series side lock" which appeared (but wasn't) to have been constructed from flintlock parts. This pattern 1843 became the principal handgun of the East India Company up until it was taken over by the British home Government in 1859.
This originated from our Nepalese Palace purchase of 2003, and at that time was selected from approximately 200 examples included in the Collection as the best there. We had kept it as a Reference example, and now have decided to offer it for sale.
It is BRITISH made with London Proof Marks on the barrel. These included the CROWN / CP black powder proof for muzzle loaders, as well as the CROWN / V viewed mark. The percussion lock bears the East India post 1808 RAMPANT LION logo and the pistol retains its trapped swivel ramrod for use while mounted on a horse. It also has the standard lanyard ring on the butt, to keep it from being dropped.
Interestingly the pistol still shows its East India Company Regimental unit markings of 47th Regiment, Company A, Trooper # 75.
This pistol found its way into Nepal probably with the returning Gurkha troops after they helped the British quell the Indian Mutiny or Sepoy Rebellion of 1857/1859. The brass butt cap is marked with an A and on the other side a Nepalese Unit marking that resembles "63". We believe that this pistol came from the Officer's Mess at the TUMU Barracks in Kathmandu where they had a weapons display.
Please see the wonderful work by David Harding, SMALL ARMS OF THE EAST INDIA COMPANY Volume 2 pages 302 to 308 for full details including the original acquisition cost to the EIC of 32 Shillings, at today's rate of exchange that would only be $2.40 each!
The best example we received, and it is ready to be displayed
