Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely iron framed "box-lock" style flintlock pocket pistol dating to approximately 1780, and marked clearly on the lock plates with Turner on the left and London on the right. Turner is listed as working in London from 1770 to 1785, though not much else is known about this maker. Other examples of similar single and double barrel pocket pistols have been seen with the same markings.
The weapon measures 6 3/4" in overall length with a screw off 2 1/2" smooth bored .44"cal iron cannon barrel, which in very good condition, showing signs of light to moderate use. Unfortunately as with most we see the screw joint is seized at the frame, and it cannot be removed. The bottom of the action bears London proof marks: the CROWN / GP "Gunmakers" black powder proof and CROWN / V "viewed" marking.
The frame, action and barrel show a lovely lightly oxidized finish, with the original line engraving well preserved, and just a bit of light peppering in areas. The end of the frame is fitted with a slab sided figured walnut grip in just about perfect display condition, with some great grain and a lovely finish. The lock functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full. It also has a half cock safety, allowing it to be safely stored in a pocket ready to cock and fire.
