Regular price $995.00

Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely iron framed "boxlock" style flintlock pocket pistol dating to approximately 1810, and marked clearly on the lock with SHARPE on the left and LONDON on the right. The London Gun maker Joseph Sharpe was in business from 1800 until 1840, and we have had several examples of his work previously, including one brass frame pistol similar to this iron example. Initially he contracted with the Hudson Bay Company to supply these good quality Flintlock pistols that were traded to Native Americans in exchange for FUR PELTS that were eagerly desired in the European Fashion Trade. He would also be known for his brass pocket pistols, and for a time worked with William Keene of Birmingham who worked 1808-1815.

The weapon measures 6 1/4" in overall length with a screw off 1 3/4" smooth bored .49"cal iron cannon barrel, which in very good condition, showing signs of light to moderate use. Like most we see, the barrel joint is unfortunately seized, and probably has been for well over 100 years. The bottom of the action bears London proof marks: the CROWN / P "proof" and CROWN / V "viewed" marking from the London Gun Company proof house.

The frame, action and barrel show a lovely lightly oxidized finish, with the original decorative border well preserved, and just a bit of light peppering in areas. There are also some small engraved "stand of arms" decorations on the sides of the boxlock around the maker name and address. The top of the frame also shows some lovely decorative engraving. The end of the frame is fitted with a slab sided figured walnut grip in lovely display condition, with some great grain and a lovely finish. There is a silver escutcheon on the back of the grip, which actually has a monogram on it, however we were not able to read it.

The top of the action features a lovely sliding half-cock, safety, which also serves to lock the frizzen on top of the pan, which has a raised edge. This would very effectively keep the powder from spilling out while in a vest pocket. The pistol functions correctly, with the hidden trigger folding out only when the hammer is fully cocked, after which the action can be dry fired. The safety is fully functional. preventing the hammer from moving to full cock until it is slid backwards.

A great Flintlock pocket pistol, suitable for any Gentleman or Military Officer. Ready to display!
