Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely iron framed "boxlock" style flintlock pocket pistol dating to approximately 1790-1810, and marked clearly on the lock with J. & W. Richards on the left and LONDON on the right. There were many London gunmakers with "Richard" or "Richards" as their surname. We believe that the “J” is most likely John Richards, who worked 1760-1821, and "W” could be a William Richards. We have seen several other examples by this same maker, including turn over pocket pistols, blunderbusses, and other items.
The weapon measures 5 ¾" in overall length with a screw off 1 ½" smooth bored .48"cal iron cannon barrel, which in very good condition, showing signs of light to moderate use. Unlike most that we have seen, the screw joint is actually still free, and the barrel can easily be removed! The bottom of the action bears London proof marks: the CROWN / GP "Gunmakers" black powder proof and CROWN / V "viewed" marking from the London Gun Company proof house. There is also an R stamp, probably for "Richards".
The frame, action and barrel show a lovely lightly oxidized finish, with the original decorative border well preserved, and just a bit of light peppering in areas. There are also some small engraved decorations in areas, such as around "LONDON" and on the bottom of the trigger guard.
The end of the frame is fitted with a slab sided figured walnut grip in lovely display condition, with some great grain and a lovely finish. The lock functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full.
A great Flintlock pocket pistol, suitable for any Gentleman or Military Officer. Ready to display!
