Original Item: Only One Available. William Chance worked from 1830 to 1860 and was renowned for his fine "wire twist barrels". He exported many quality arms to the United States, of which this is an excellent example. Both locks have lovely decorative engraving and are marked W. Chance & Son in European Style Black Letter style. The top strap between the barrels is marked London Real Twist in the same style, indicating the forging style. There is also lovely engraving on the barrel tang, trigger guard, and butt plate.
The shotgun comes complete with its original brass tipped wood ramrod that retains its brass mounting to rear for the attachment of wire brushes and cleaning jags. The wrist of the fine walnut stock is beautifully checkered, however it looks like the stock has a repaired break under the end of the barrel. There also looks to be an old repair to the barrel tang, so the gun did suffer serious damage, which was then repaired professionally. The shotgun bears 30 inch barrels, which measure approximately to 16 bore/gauge.
A fine early Victorian Sporting double barrel Shotgun that probably saw use before the Civil War. Ready to Display!
