Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Set. This is an impressive British Second Boer War-era 17th Lancers mannequin display, assembled from a mixture of original period equipment and later reproduction components. The display depicts a cavalryman of the famous 17th (Duke of Cambridge’s Own) Lancers, the “Death or Glory Boys,” whose distinctive skull-and-crossbones insignia appears throughout the reproduction uniform and headgear. The principal original components are the Sam Browne belt and cross-strap, revolver holster, ammunition pouch, and tall officer-style riding boots with spurs, while the uniform, helmet, trousers, bandolier, shoulder protection, and sword are later reproductions.
The set consists of:
- Original Sam Browne belt with cross-strap.
- Original ammo pouch attached to Sam Browne belt.
- Original Revolver holster attached to Sam Browne belt.
- Original British Officer’s tall riding boots with attached spurs, also appearing original.
- Reproduction Lancer’s uniform with skull collar badges.
- Reproduction Lancer’s pith helmet with skull badge.
- Reproduction Lancer’s trousers.
- Reproduction chainmail shoulder pads.
- Reproduction Lancer’s Bandolier with attached back pouch with Skull badge, also reproduction.
- Mannequin measuring 67” tall.
- Replica British P1912 Cavalry Saber made in India with etched blade. Scabbard throat is now broken off and sits at ricasso when scabbard is removed, too oxidized to move. This was a late 20th century replica which was left in bad shape. Sits in its belt scabbard still attached to the belt.
This is a good representative set made up of mostly reproduction parts with some original pieces mixed in. It will work great as a placeholder in your collection as an all-original set would run you at least $5-6,000! The mannequin is included with this example. The mannequin will display fine leaning up against something, but it will not stand on its own.
The 17th Lancers had a distinguished history long before the Boer War. The regiment is especially remembered for riding in the front line of the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava in 1854, but it also served during the Indian Mutiny and the Anglo-Zulu War before returning to South Africa during the Second Boer War.
The regiment served in South Africa from 1900 to 1902 and the campaign later appeared among the battle honours carried on its insignia. The Royal Lancers Museum and National Army Museum both document the regiment’s continued use of the Death’s Head emblem and its Boer War service.
With its original Sam Browne belt, revolver holster, ammunition pouch, officer-style riding boots and spurs, reproduction 17th Lancers uniform and Death’s Head insignia, Boer War-style pith helmet, bandolier, shoulder protection, and complete mannequin, this is a substantial mixed-period display representing one of Britain’s most famous cavalry regiments during the South African War.
