Original Item. Only One Available. This is an outstanding and service-worn example of a British officer’s “small sword” with a lovely faceted pommel. The faceting of the pommel in this style was done around the 1770s, making this a fantastic American Revolutionary War issue piece.
During the Revolutionary War, British officers and some enlisted men carried small swords, which were lighter, thrusting swords used as a secondary weapon. These were distinct from the heavier sabers and hangers carried by other soldiers. Small swords were not only a practical weapon but also a symbol of status and rank.
The sword has a 30¼” triangular blade with an iron hilt. The grip is bare wood, and is the original wood, but the sword originally had some sort of covering over this, and there is a very small remnant of that material towards the pommel. The faceted iron pommel is in fantastic shape without any denting, and the handguard is in similar shape. The “bowl” crossguard has a lovely oxidized patina, and this example really has held up well over the past 250 years.
Very difficult to find in any condition, but this one is in tremendous shape with just material loss on the grip. Comes ready for display in your Revolutionary War collection!
