Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very nice British Double Barrel percussion shotgun, in what looks to be 12 bore, a very popular size then. It is fitted with a 34" double barrels and measures 50" in overall length. There is simple line engraving on both locks and most of the metalwork. Both locks are marked MORTIMER, a legendary name in British firearms.
H.W. Mortimer was a top quality maker, mostly Serving King George III. He was granted the right to mark his guns "Gunmaker To His Majesty", at least until King George III died in 1820. This shotgun was probably made in the time of King William IV, who reigned 1830 - 1837.
The barrel assembly on this gun is relatively standard, with the two barrels joined by a central rib, which is marked LAMINATED STEEL to indicate how it was forged. It still is easily removed from the stock, and the bottoms are marked with the bore size 12, as well as proofs from the English city of Birmingham on the bottoms of both barrels and the barrel breech plugs.
The locks both function however neither will hold correctly at half cock. Both cap nipples are present, but worn, and we have not checked to see if they are clear. The wood stock is in very good condition, with no major cracking or damage that we can see. The wrist still bears some lovely checkering, which is still mostly crisp, and there is a small silver escutcheon on the bottom of the butt stock. The original ramrod is unfortunately missing, now replaced with a stained wooden dowel.
This is a great looking gun, and would look perfect mounted on the wall. Ready to display!
