Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a typical British-made Double Barreled Percussion shotgun, almost certainly intended for the large U.S. import market. This is definitely a substantially built example in the larger 10 gauge, featuring heavy barrels and two barrel wedges instead of the usual one. It also looks to have been a very impressive upmarket example when first made, featuring fantastic engraved nickel silver mountings and a lovely checkered stock. It however has seen extensive use during its life, and oxidation and subsequent cleaning has removed any markings that were present on the barrel strap and the locks, if there were any to begin with. It has a fantastic well broken in look that is impossible to duplicate.
The barrel looks to be spiral forged, which means that the barrel was forged using twisted pieces of metal, which is actually not that out of the ordinary. Many gun barrels of the 19th century were made from nails, stubs, chains, and even horseshoes, as the wear and use of these items resulted in superior barrels when they were forged and twisted. The finish on the barrels is faded to a lovely polished patina, but the spiral lines are still readily apparent. The double barrel assembly is 31 3/8" in length, an the shotgun has an overall length of 47".
The bottoms of each barrel bear the correct proof marks from the Birmingham Gun Company proofhouse, including the CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / BPC "proof" and CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / V "viewed" marks. There are no additional markings on the bottom of the barrels to give the bore or any "CROWN / BP" markings, so these are the proofs used from 1813 until 1855.
This very nice DOUBLE BARREL 10 bore Percussion Shotgun presents very nicely, with a lovely worn patina of age. Both locks function, however the only the right one holds properly at half cock, while the left will fire at both half and full cock. Both of the hammers show a good amount of wear, as does the all of the metalwork. The cap nipple cones are present, however both show a good amount of use, with powder burn and past oxidation present. The original cleaning rod is unfortunately missing.
A very nice British-Made shotgun with a lovely well-used look, ready to hang on the wall and display!
