Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This very nice Brazilian M1889 Cavalry Saber was most likely released in 1976 from military stores in Rio De Janeiro, along with a lot of other now obsolete edged weapons. It is in good service-worn condition, with heavy storage wear.
The blade surface is fair and dark, with some pitting and oxidation, displaying some wear and staining along its 32¾ inch length. It has the correct M proof mark on the spine. The cupped steel guard is stamped on the exterior with the seal for the Estados Unidos Brasil (United States of Brazil) with a date of 1889, for the date of the start of the First Brazilian Republic.
The blade ricasso is maker marked WEYERSBERG / KIRSCHBAUM & Co. / SOLINGEN, indicating manufacture by the legendary firm of Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie. This company is a famous manufacturer of military swords and cutlery in Solingen, Germany - a city famous since the middle ages for its metal-working and craftsmanship in sword making. The traditional manufacturing of swords at WKC dates back to the year 1774 when the Weyersberg first registered the ''Kings head'' as their trademark. Later in 1883 the company merged with the Kirschbaums and the company WKC was formed as it exists today.
The included steel scabbard is in fair condition with heavy oxidation pitting and some light denting. This is an example that could use a good cleaning.
It's very hard to find any South American swords especially one with sharp clear Brazil markings and in such fine condition. Ready to display!
