Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This very nice Brazilian M1880 Artillery Saber was most likely released in 1976 from military stores in Rio De Janeiro, along with a lot of other now obsolete edged weapons. It is in very good condition, with the expected storage wear, and also some wear from use, which is rare to see. Most of these are practically unissued.
The blade surface has a lovely oxidized patina, with some past pitting towards the tip. Most likely there was water trapped in the scabbard, which led to rusting of the blade. The blade has not been sharpened and does not have any nicks in the edge. The cupped steel guard is marked with the letters E.U.B. for Estados Unidos Brasil (United States of Brazil), an early name for the country. Just above the EUB is the “Crossed Cannons” insignia for Artillery. The hilt has pressed black leather grips secured with five steel rivets, with cracks in one side near both sets of double rivets, which is commonly seen on these. Overall length of the sword is 37 1/2 inches.
The blade ricasso is maker marked ALEX. COPPEL / SOLINGEN, around the trademark "Scales" logo, indicating manufacture by Alexander Coppel & Co. located in the legendary "City of Blades", Solingen. This company made large amounts of export bayonets during the 19th century, and also manufactured bayonets for many years and up through WWII under the name Alcoso. Sadly, as the Coppel family was Jewish, they saw their company stolen from them and "Aryanized" during WWII by the NSDAP. For more information please see J. The included steel scabbard is in great shape, and just has a few rust spots and tiny dents. It also has a single M proof mark on the drag.
It's very hard to find any South American swords especially one with sharp clear Brazil markings and in such fine condition. Ready to display!
