Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very scarce Belgian Bayonet, the Model 1880 sawback for use by pioneers / engineers in the Belgian Army to cut brush and saplings. One of only two sawback bayonets used by Belgium this version has a lighter fullered blade. Up until WWI, this style of bayonet was common for "Pioneer" troops, light engineering soldiers that prepared for later troops. Contrary to rumors, the back of the bayonet really was for sawing wood, not a device to inflict grievous wounds on enemies. However, rumors proved stronger than truth, and by WW1 the saw back bayonet was on the way out.
The ricasso is GB marked for Gouvernment Belge (Belgian Army use) and the rampant lion. Over this is the scales and the “A.C.” trademark of the Alexander Coppel firm. This company made large amounts of export bayonets during the 19th century, and also manufactured bayonets for many years and up through WWII under the name Alcoso. The other side of the ricasso is stamped with the year of manufacture, 1888.
The catch works well and the bayonet is in excellent condition overall. It comes in its original brass-mounted leather scabbard with a hanging loop on the throat. The fittings still fit well and the leather is a bit stiff.
An excellent and scarce bayonet, ready for display.
