Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a turn of the 19th Century Belgian officer's flintlock pistol, made by P. Meyer of Brussels, the capital city. The maker marking on the lock plate is a bit obscured, but close examination as well as consulting other known examples, we can see that it reads as follows:
P. Meyer
Arm’er du Roy
a Bruxelles
This basically indicates that P. Meyer was a Royal Armorer in service to Brussels, the Belgian Capital. We have seen several other examples, including a matched pair, which bear the same markings and have the same overall shape and style of fittings. This looks to be a well known "model", and available in a variety of different sizes.
The pistol is fitted with a 8 3/4" slightly swamped "Damascus" steel barrel, which is fitted with a rear v notch sight, and with a front blade sight. It is marked on the left side with the E / L G / * in an oval proof mark of Liège, Belgium, a major firearms manufacturing center during the 18th and 19th centuries. Its overall length is just over 14" and it has a nice checkered grip with a plated iron butt cap. It is all iron fitted, with very elegant designs for the side plate, ramrod pipe, and trigger guard finial. There is a bone tipped wooden ramrod stored under the barrel, which looks to be original.
Overall condition is very nice, with al lovely patina of age. The stock shows a few small cracks but no major damage, and has lovely grain. The metalwork has a lovely aged patina, but no major rust or other damage. The barrel still shows the spiral "Damascus" texture well. We checked the lock, and it does function, but the tumbler is worn and it will fire at both half and full cock.
A lovely early Flintlock officer's pistol from a well-known Belgian maker, ready to display!
