Original Belgian Flintlock Dragoon Pistol Circa 1815-1835

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Belgium as we know it today was only established in 1830, when the population rebelled against Dutch rule. Prior to that, most of the country had been known as Flanders and other local areas, which were possessions of Spain, France and Holland over the prior several hundreds of years. After the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte the territory was considered to be part of Holland, or the Netherlands as we call it today. This lasted only 15 years until 1830.

Belgium was an Industrial powerhouse with its great capacity coming from the City of LIEGE, where gun making was a key industry supplying Military Weapons all over Europe.

The Flintlock pistol offered here comes from LIEGE and dates just after 1815. Pistols of this type were in wide use in Belgium itself, as well as other Countries and the Civilian Market. This is a substantial brass mounted walnut stocked completely standard Military Flintlock Pistol of the day. The barrel happens to be marked BELGIUM, but that was added just before it was imported into the United States many years ago, as Country of Origin was then required to be marked on the item. There is also a small proof mark on the lock plate just rear of the pan.

In the 1920's these very pistols were advertised by BANNERMAN'S of New York for under $ 30.00. per unit. Times certainly have changed. At that time a Sharp's Civil War Carbine cost just $ 4.00. a piece!

Our example is in excellent condition, fully cleaned and ready to display.
